Ten quiet principles

Healthy soil comes first

Good soil feeds your plants, holds water, supports roots and teems with life.

TipAdd organic matter every year — compost, well-rotted manure or leaf mould.

Water according to the soil, not the calendar

Plants need deep, less frequent watering so roots grow down and become more resilient.

TipCheck the soil 5–10 cm down. If it's dry, water thoroughly. If it's still damp, wait.

Mulch for moisture & healthy soil

Mulch locks in moisture, suppresses weeds, cools the soil and breaks down to feed it.

TipApply a 5 cm layer of compost, bark or leaf mould in spring and top up in autumn.

Right plant, right place

Plants that suit your soil and Suffolk's climate will thrive with less fuss and fewer inputs.

TipChoose tough, well-suited plants. They reward you with better growth and more resilience.

Keep it tidy, not perfect

Regular small tasks prevent bigger problems and keep your garden looking its best.

TipDeadhead, cut back and tidy regularly. Ten minutes a week makes a big difference.

Feed the soil, not just the plants

Healthy soil provides what plants need over the long term.

TipUse compost and organic feeds. Avoid over-feeding with high-nitrogen fertilisers.

Work with nature

Gardens that support wildlife are more balanced, resilient and rewarding to be in.

TipProvide flowers, shelter, food and water for pollinators, birds and beneficial insects.

Improve a little, every year

Small, consistent improvements create lasting change.

TipFocus on one area or one job at a time. Your garden will thank you for it.

Enjoy every season

Every season has its beauty. Planning for year-round interest makes your garden more rewarding.

TipCombine evergreens, perennials, bulbs and structure for colour, texture and form all year.

Mind your resources

Gardening sustainably saves money, protects the environment and builds stronger plants.

TipCollect rainwater, make your own compost and reuse where you can.

Every garden is unique. These principles are here to guide, not to rule. Use them in a way that suits you, your garden and your life.

Bon Gardening Field Guides are written with Suffolk gardens in mind. Every garden is different, so these guides offer practical principles rather than fixed rules.
