Gardening for Suffolk care homes and community organisations

Gardens in care homes, supported living settings and community organisations are shared spaces. They belong to residents, families, staff and visitors. Keeping them well maintained takes more than a mower.

For many people in care, or those living in supported housing, the garden is the first place they want to be when the weather allows. It is where families visit, where residents take a quiet moment, and where staff sometimes find a few minutes of peace. A well-maintained outdoor space can make the whole setting feel calmer, more welcoming and more dignified.

I am not a healthcare professional or support worker. Bon Gardening is a gardening business. But I built it after nearly fifteen years working in counselling, education and mental health. That background shapes how I approach every visit, and it matters especially when the garden is used by vulnerable people.

Why a mental health background helps in the garden

Professional boundaries, safeguarding awareness, clear communication and a calm, unhurried presence — these are not extras in shared settings. They are essential. I understand that some residents may want to chat, others may prefer to be left alone, and a sudden change in routine can feel unsettling. I work with staff, not around them, and I am happy to adjust my pace or approach to suit the people using the space.

What the work looks like

Every organisation is different. Some need a regular fortnightly tidy of lawns, borders and paths. Others need a one-off refresh to bring a neglected space back to a manageable condition. The work can include grass cutting, weeding, pruning, border clearance, leaf clearing and light maintenance of planters and seating areas.

Professional standards

I am fully insured, Enhanced DBS checked and safeguarding aware. I arrive when I say I will, work neatly, respect privacy, and keep the site safe and tidy before I leave. You will receive clear, honest pricing with no obligation, and I am happy to discuss any risk assessments, access requirements or seasonal priorities your organisation may have.

Working across Suffolk

I am based in the Mid Suffolk area and work with organisations across Suffolk and surrounding villages. Many of the gardens I care for are in small towns, on the edge of rural communities, or tucked behind buildings that are easy to overlook. Wherever the space is, the same principles apply: reliable care, respectful communication, and a garden that feels better for the people who use it.

If you manage a care home, supported living site, residential home, charity or community organisation in Suffolk, I would be glad to visit, walk the space with you, and provide a free, no-obligation quotation. You can get in touch through the contact page or call me directly on 07572 924434.

Bon Gardening Thought

A garden that is cared for with respect becomes a place where people feel a little more at ease. That is the work I try to do.

Every garden is unique. The ideas shared in The Bon Blog are based on my experience working in Suffolk gardens. Your own garden may behave differently depending on its soil, aspect and local conditions.
